Post pandemic pop princess are pretty hard to come by. Dolly, Cher, Madonna & Tina were not on tour. I would have to cast my net further.
It’s not that a don’t consider Beyoncé and Lady Gaga legends because they’re not talented enough but it’s an age thing and they weren’t touring either. In the end, Alicia Keys was my female pop legend and I couldn’t wait to belt out If I Ain’t Got You, No One, New York and Girl on Fire. My trusty accomplice, Jenny, and I were Birmingham bound on a school night!
We arrived to see the end of the support act and were both glad to have missed that and awaited Alicia’s arrival which caused uproarious clapping and hollering, mostly from me.
The first half of the show was unusually sedate as she played a lot of new music and everyone remained in their seats. It was bizarre.
Finally, New York lifted everyone up and Girl on Fire and Fallin’ got the crowd moving.
It was not what I had in mind but there’s no doubt she’ll be a legend one day.
