Roll out the red carpet; me and my good friend Jenny are coming to London! Okay, the red carpet turned out to be white and it wasn’t for me and Jenny- it was for the stars of The Northman, a Robert Eggers film staring Anya Taylor-Joy and Alexander Skarsgard. With cameos from, amongst others, Bjork (yes, Oh So Quiet Bjork), Nicole Kidman and Willem Defoe.
Arriving in Leicester Square, we saw that the Odeon was screened off with temporary fencing that had huge inward facing film posters attached to them with tie wraps. I waved my hand nonchalantly and told Jenny, in all my wisdom, that they would be taken down soon. However, I soon began to doubt myself so asked the friendly looking security man at the entrance if they would. His friendly looking face turned instantly to a smug one as he told us the fencing would remain and we would see ‘nothing’.
I was inclined to think he was kidding me, after all, a red carpet movie premiere is about publicity; a public relations event and who better to cheer the stars on than ordinary folk like us?
It soon became apparent that he was, in fact, not kidding me at all! I had dragged Jenny to The Big Smoke to look at Heras fencing and nothing more.
Something had to be done and that deed came in the shape of a public bin. Yes, a bin. A bin with cigarette stub marks and ash on the top but this didn’t stop us!
We clambered up and locked our legs in place for an astonishing forty-five minutes and was overjoyed when Anya Taylor-Joy looked our way and waved! It had all been worthwhile! Even Robert Eggers and his lovely wife gave us a wry smile as did Alexander Skarsgard.
We saw the white carpet in the media later and saw that Anya’s dress was in fact knee length not floor length as we assumed but we’d seen enough. As we headed for our tube, we gave the security guy the smuggest smiles possible and his original friendly face was somewhat sourer!
