When I asked the Ladies that Lunch come Butlin’s girls if they fancied an evening at Waterstones in Leeds for Joanne Harris & Sarah Pinborough : In conversation, it was a resounding yes from all. We are, after all, a scribble of English teachers. Yes, that is an entirely made up collective noun and I’d bet my last pen that I’m not the first to use it but I like it.
Claire, Katie, Laura, Jenny and I travelled just over an hour from school and paid a measly five pounds for what was a thoroughly splendid evening in a glorious, three level Waterstones. On entry, we all took a deep breath and and basked in the atmosphere and aroma only a bookshop offers. Upstairs, we were offered wine or juice and the evening got underway with both Sarah and Joanne answering questions put to them from their publisher.
Both authors talked openly and with warmth about their characters and themselves in turn and how their lives as a woman influenced their writing. As a woman of forty, I was drawn into this deeply and even found myself asking a question about it at the end. The topic of coping with success was an obvious one as Joanne Harris’s Chocolat was made into a highly acclaimed film and Sarah Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes was made into a highly successful Netflix series. Despite these successes, both authors were genuine, warm and without pretense or ego and we all said we could’ve listened to them all night and guess what? They were both once English teachers!
Afterwards, I bought three books and had them all signed and I can’t wait to get reading.
