Although I’m doing forty new things, I must admit that my Nan did show me how to knit about thirty years ago and she even showed me casting off. She did not, however, teach me casting on so I could never knit.
After the success of the watercolour class, I booked a beginners class with HobbyCraft and received my pack in the post; two balls of yarn, a pair of 8mm needles and a guide.
The class started promptly and one other woman and I were taught by Chrissy, a highly competent knitter.
The elusive casting on was far simpler than I ever imagined and after two knit stitches, muscle memory meant I was well away.
Later, we learnt the purl stitch which is just a backwards knit stitch. It felt awkward but I mastered that fairly quickly too.
Casting off was the last job and I had a little knitted square.
Next up, you’ve guessed it, a scarf.
